Welcome to Bradshaw Community Primary School’s Year 2 class page.
We have a creative team who strive to bring the curriculum alive around the children through the use of visual reality, green screen and by using the facilities available in school.
In Year 2, we are taught by Mr Carney and our marvellous teaching assistant Mrs Walton. Year 2 is a very exciting year for the children for numerous reasons and the children love our exciting topics, performances and school trips like our annual visit to Knowsley Safari Park.
The children in Year 2 have access to lot’s of extra curricular activities such as Active Soccer, Forest School and Yoga. The children participate in our yearly celebrations such as Harvest Festival, Singing around the tree and they are the star performers in our Christmas play. At Bradshaw, the children have the opportunity to use our outdoor learning facilities, climbing equipment and the daily mile track to promote healthy living.
Phonics, Reading and Writing
At Bradshaw, children have daily phonics lessons either as a whole class or in small groups. We use our daily phonics lessons to support our Friday spelling test, which is usually based around the sounds taught throughout the week. Children also have access to online websites such as Nessy and Fast phonics to help support and boost their phonics knowledge.
In Year 2, the children have access to a range of texts in our class and school library. We hear the children read a minimum of once a week both individually and in a small group setting. The children take multiple books home on a weekly basis and they have access to Reading Eggs and Reading Eggpress which has a plethora of online reading books and lessons to keep them entertained at home for hours. In guided reading, we follow the Literacy Companies pathways to read. Through the reading pathway, children are encouraged to read for pleasure with their teachers and peers alike. They also have the opportunity to read and compare a range of literature from a variety of authors.
In our writing lessons, we follow the award winning pathways to write. Our topics help the children write for different purposes while developing their spellings and writing skills. Each unit of work is based around amazing books which engage the children by building mystery and bringing the curriculum to life. During our ‘Troll Swap’ unit, the children will take on the role of authors as they write their own fiction story in the style of the book. While reading ‘The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark’ the children will see our classroom transform into a woodland area as they explore non-fiction texts that prepare them for writing a non-chronological report about owls. In our ‘Dragon Machine' unit, We look out for mischievous dragons on the loose causing mayhem in school. Then we become inventors by designing our very own mythical creature machine and writing a set of instructions on how to build it. The children will then have the opportunity to make their own wooden soldiers as we read about ‘Major Glad, Major Dizzy’. These two unfortunate toys find themselves separated from their owner in Victorian Britain before making their way through each decade before being found in the modern day. We also take on the traditional tale of Little Red Riding Hood through the modern interpretation of ‘The Last Wolf’ which delves into the urbanisation of the world around us. Finally, we finish the year on the excellent book ‘Grandad’s Secret Giant’ which leads us nicely into creating a mural looking back on our time in Year 2.
At Bradshaw the children take part in four a day every morning as they come into school. 4 a day is a quick activity that enables children to practice the four operations on a daily basis. In our math’s lessons, we have access to a wide range of resources that are available to be picked up in our classroom. We follow the White Rose Maths Scheme which takes the children on a learning journey. The children are encouraged to use concrete resources to build numbers and help them problem solve. The children are encouraged to think critically and write down all the different methods they can think of. This allows them to demonstrate their understanding before tackling a range of questions that challenges their reasoning skills.
The children in Year 2 love how hands on their maths lessons are and enjoy the challenge of finding different ways to answer the questions. In Year 2, we supplement our White Rose Maths scheme with some fun interactive maths websites such as times table rockstars and maths seeds. These fun websites/apps keep the children entertained and they have been a big hit with our parents. The children earn in-game coins and prizes as they battle their way through the different lessons, time trials and challenges. Last year, we had an amazing day where we dressed up as our rockstar avatar to celebrate maths in school.
In Year 2 the children are expected to read three times a week with their online reading log filled out by a parent. We send home two school books a week however, children can read using the online platforms such as Reading+, Reading Eggs, Reading Eggpress or their own books.
We send home spellings on a weekly basis which can be accessed through our class webpage or the children’s Google Classroom account.
The children have access to the online learning platform Google Classroom. Through Google Classroom, we send optional work, helpful videos and other fun activities that can be completed at home.
